K is for Kinect

It's been a year and a half since Kinect was released for the Xbox 360 and I'm still not jazzed about it. In fact, the only Kinect exclusive game that I had interest in, Star Wars, has gotten tons of bad reviews. I'm usually not one to take reviews to heart. However, the game itself seems like a collection of mini-games, and a short single player campaign. Not what I want from a Star Wars game. The only M-rated Kinect game, Rise of Nightmares, also gotten crap reviews.

So what does Kinect hold in the future for the hardcore gaming crowd? I'm not sure. Maybe one day a great  game will come along and get me off my gaming chair. I know a few games are being integrated with Kinect, but if I can use a controller, I will.

For me, I think that's part of the problem. Not having a controller and hoping the sensor scans your body correctly and picks up your every move, it seems like too much trouble.

I'm also concerned about how a action packed game would play out with Kinect. Imagine Gears of War for Kinect? I'll pass, thanks.

I like that motion control is an option. I like how it works on many Wii games. But I also like that I can play Super Smash Bros Brawl or the Legend of Zelda sitting down, with a controller in my hand. Kinect might be a revolutionary idea, but it's still not compatible with the games I want to play. And maybe it never will.

Microsoft's E3 2011 Conference

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

This morning marked the start of this year's E3 with the Microsoft conference. What's coming to an Xbox 360 near you soon? Let's take a look:

The Good:
Gears of War 3 Campaign sneak peak featuring the Silverback wearable "tank." It looks badass. The Leviathan monster is massive and it looks like a blast to fight. The best part was when Cole drops a create full of Tickers on the the monster.

Great demos of Tomb Raider and Modern Warfare 3. (even if the CoD demo was a bit long)

Mass Effect 3 demo looks amazing.

Halo Combat Evolved will be remastered for the 360 this fall.

Microsoft has partnered with many different companies including Youtube, Disney, and TV stations. This is the beginning of the end for traditional cable TV. Bing will search content on your 360 so it will be easy to find.

Kinect's Fun Labs looks like it's promising. You can make your avatar look just like you.

HALO 4 with Master Chef!!!!!!! They said it was going to be a trilogy.  But it was really short and it's suppose to come out next year.

The Bad

Does everything need Kinect? Seriously, Fable the Journey, Ghost Recon, Mass Effect 3.

Kinect might ruin the gaming experience. Do we really need to make gun motions with your hands or pretend to take the reins of a horse? When our character needs to jump, do we have to too? I'm not excited....

The Ugly

More Kinect casual games. More Dance games, sports games, games for kids. (really did a Sesame Street game need to be featured at E3?) Maybe I'm just a snob, but most of Microsoft's conference had me yawning.

I'm hoping Sony's conference tonight and Nintendo's tomorrow morning will be more entertaining and varied. If I hear "Kinect" one more time today, I might be sick.....

Comparing PlayStation Move to Xbox 360's Kinect

Four years after the Wii started the motion control craze, the PS3 and 360 are finally getting on board. In just a few days, PlayStation Move will be released. On November 4, Kinect hits stores.

Which one is better, cheaper, more fun? At this point, it's hard to tell. But I feel in my gut, when the dust settles, Move will be seen as more "hardcore " gamer friendly, with Kinect winning over little kids and families. I could be wrong.

With the price, Kinect has bundles starting at $150.00. Move has bundles, two types of controllers, and the Eye camera.

Move games seems to be geared towards older kids and adults, especially with the all the support Move is getting from established titles like LittleBigPlanet2 and Killzone 3. Kinect has Fable III and has announced big games like Gears of War 3 will not have Kinect support.
